Why Peat-free?
Today, lowland peat bogs and their wildlife are threatened through peat extraction; many species such as dragonflies, butterflies and birds depend on peat for their existence.
Healthy peat also absorbs and stores carbon; but as it degrades, the carbon is released, ending up in the atmosphere as harmful carbon dioxide.
Peat develops very slowly; a 10 metre deep peat bog will have taken 10,000 years to develop, so they're effectively irreplaceable once destroyed.
